Fickle Friends

80's New Wave-influenced Pop

Thursday 8th May 2014

Fickle Friends, from Brighton, UK, make 80's New Wave-influenced Pop.

Consisting of Natassja Shiner (Vox/Synth), Sam Morris (Drums), Harry Herrington (Bass/Backing Vox), Chris Hall (Guitar) and Jack Wilson (Synth/Backing Vox), the band recently played Dot to Dot Festival, with singer Natti since answering the following questions for Fred Perry Subculture.

How did you all meet and decide to make music together?
We all met at uni in Brighton, I kind of brought the band together over the course of our 1st/2nd year. We did a lot of writing and gigging but the band only really found its feet last summer, after Harry joined us, and we started writing the ‘good stuff’.

How did you decide on your band name?
Funnily enough none of us came up with the name - one of our friends threw it in to conversation on day and I thought - that’s a cool band name.

How would you describe your sound?
Fundamentally it’s indie-pop…but with some 80’s new-wave thrown in for good measure. We love synths, swirling guitars and boy-girl bittersweet vocals that all make you yearn for summers past.

Who did you grow up listening to?
I was brought up in a very musical environment. My mum started taking me to festivals when I was tiny… She was (and is) a big Madonna/Kate Bush/Prince fan, I got hooked on alt pop immediately. But like so many young girls in the 90’s, Britney was my girl…but I’ve always hd a huge thing for MJ (who doesn’t?!)

What influences you, other than music?
We are all influenced by films, life experience, and in particular…our parents and people in our lives. For some of us photography/art and travel play a big role in how we write and produce music.

What new music are you listening to at the moment?
SO many favourites at the moment…some picks are JAWS, Jungle, SOHN, MNEK, Emilie Nicolas and Say Lou Lou.

Do you associate with any subcultures, or did you ever, growing up?
No, not really - I’ve never really subscribed to any particular style or label, I like change too much - fickle in that way ;)

What's been the best show you've played recently and why?
Liverpool Sound City was pretty incredible…Sam and I used to live there and going back to play the Kaz was something to tick off our bucket list. The crowd was overwhelming, the sound was epic and the response has been so strong. (The remainder of the night was a glorious blur of cocktails and schmoozing with music friends, old and new)

Who are your biggest style Icons?
I have so many style icons, but if I had to pick three I’d say Nicole Ritchie (because she’s truly the queen of Boho-chic), Phoebe Lettice (Retro, vintage, 80’s, 90’s perfection!) and Kate Moss (a MUST, because she does everything from rock chic to classic red carpet).

What's next for the band?
We’ll be releasing our third single AND video hopefully during the summer with a view to recording an album at some point….soonish. We’re doing lots of exciting shows and festivals over the coming months which, as an unsigned band, is pretty incredible!

If you could have any artist cover you, dead or alive who would it be?
…ABBA? Would love to see that.
