A Bingo Fury Photo
Name, where are you from?
Bingo Fury, Bristol.
Describe your style in three words?
Maths teacher chic.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Giant Swan, The Brunswick Club (RIP). I believe this was the last (or certainly one of the last) nights to of happened at the Brunswick Club - a seedy working men’s club in St Paul’s, Bristol. They were the last act of an amazing all-dayer including Moor Mother who was also amazing. Everyone was up for it.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Probably Pavement as they have pretty consistently been my favourite band since I was fifteen. They seem like entertaining company. The second would be Lizzie Mercier Descloux. She opened my eyes to playing the wrong notes in the right places.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’m not sure if it’s classed as a subculture but the New York no-wave thing has influenced me massively. It demonstrated to me that you don’t need to be good at an instrument to make really captivating music. There was also some great cinema and fashion within that scene (Anya Phillips, Jim Jarmusch) which crossed over with the music.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I would like to meet Elvis. He’s a hero of mine and I’d like to see if he is as unhinged as I imagine him to be.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
It would probably be The Cube - a volunteer-run theatre/cinema/venue in Stokes Croft, Bristol. They keep a pristine grand piano there for people to use and all kinds of interesting junk out the back. I supported Squid there back in May which was a hoot.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Bristol has its fair share of unsung hero’s/heroines. One would be Harry Irvine, who makes music under multiple names including Big Fuss and Henry Pencil. I’m a huge fan of his work - it’s kind of hard to put your finger on it. all recorded at home. He has a vast discography on Bandcamp and puts out an album every few weeks, each as good as the last.
Bingo Fury's two singles 'Big Rain' and 'Happy Snake' are out now as a double 7". They will be supporting The Golden Dregs on tour this November, and have their headline show at Servant Jazz Quarters on 30th Nov 2021. For more information visit linktr.ee/bingofury.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'New Age' by The Velvet Underground.

'Swordfishtrombones' by Tom Waits.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“When I go downtown I always wear a corduroy suit, because it’s made of a hundred gutters for the rain to run right through / but a lonely man can’t make a move if he can’t even bring himself to choose between a pair of black and a pair of brown shoes.”
From 'Black and Brown Blues' by Silver Jews.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings' by Caroline Polacheck.

'Dreams Tonite' by Alvvays.

'Johnny & Mary' by Robert Palmer.
