A Jordy Photo
Name, where are you from?
Jordy (not Jordan). Congo and Essex - depends who’s asking.
Describe your style in three words?
Tracksuits, tracksuit, tracksuits.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Watch The Throne Tour by Jay Z & Kanye West. They performed 'Paris' like twelve times and somehow I never got bored. I don’t think anyone else can do that to me.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Earth, Wind & Fire because they made 'September' and Prince because I love 'Do Me, Baby'. I probably shouldn’t have picked such legends because being on a line up with them is a BIG ask.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I love battle rap, I’ve learnt so much from it. One of the biggest things that has stuck with me is that delivery and character is just as important (maaaaaybe even more important - that’s up for debate) than the lyrics/bars. You never want to sound monotonous and lose the interest of the listener.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Dave Chappelle. Why not? He’s a legend. He has stories, I NEEEED to hear them all. If I had to pick a musician, it’d be Jay Z. My favourite rapper of all time. The man made 'Imaginary Players', that’s my tune!
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Electric Ballroom, Camden. I remember going there twice. Once to watch Malahia and the other time was to watch Tiggs Da Author. Both times I just remember loving the room and thinking how sick it would be to perform them. Less than a year later, I got asked to do it and I jumped at the chance.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Massive curveball here. Sam Sparro! I could be wrong but I feel like the guy made 'Black & Gold' (what a song by the way) and then just went on a permanent holiday. I’ve been trying to do the same but my songs don’t seem to be 'Black & Gold' level yet.
Jordy recently released his new EP 'SMH' which features his latest track 'Die 4 The Bro'. Listen, purchase or stream it via backl.ink/146398902.
The first track you played on repeat?
Today? 'BB King Freestyle' by Lil’ Wayne. Of all time? Most probably, 'Rollout' by Ludacris.
A song that defines the teenage you?
I don’t even know where to start with this one. There was a Tim Westwood freestyle that Ice Kid and Chipmunk did when I was about thirteen and I remember watching it, deciding to rap more seriously... six years later, I did, kind of. An actual song would probably have to be 'Who Are You' by Chipmunk.
One record you would keep forever?
'Rock With You' by Michael Jackson. Timeless.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“That’s that boy from the magazine, buss my dance at the cash machine”
Skepta on 'Skepta Interlude' by Drake. It’s not usually lyrics that inspire me to be honest but I like that one because I followed Skepta from the very beginning of his journey.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
This is a tough one because there’s so many. First song that came to mind was 'Candy' by Cameo. How can you not dance to that?
A song you wished you had written?
'Bartender' by T-Pain. One of my favourite songs ever, people always think I’m joking. So simply written but wow, just wow. Go and listen again. When I meet T-Pain, this is the first thing I’m telling him.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Father Stretch My Hands Pt.1' by Kanye West. It should be illegal to not have this at max volume.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'My Flame' by Bobby Caldwell. I wish it was my song.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Wonderwall' by Oasis. If you disagree then I’m sorry that you’re wrong.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
Some of these people/songs may not be new but they’re new to me and I love them.
'Afeto' by Mayra Andrade.
'Mandy' by Scribz Riley.
'Blessing' by AirBorn Gav.
'Whole Lotta Guap' by M’Way.
'Glitter' by Jamillah Barry.
