A PROJECTOR Photo
Name, where are you from?
Callum Marinho, drummer in PROJECTOR, from Brighton.
Describe your style in three words?
Hand-me-down, klepto grunge.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Chelsea Wolfe at Islington Assembly Hall (2015). Incredible sound, incredible lights, incredible presence - I remember being completely transfixed from start to finish. It’s either that or the time my mate threw up in the middle of a Sigur Ros show because he ate a dodgy McDonald's, which some would argue was equally mesmerising.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
I’d have to say Amy Winehouse because she was absolutely the best at what she did. I never got to see her perform, so a paranormal opportunity to do so is too good to turn down. The second would be Massive Attack. I’ve found there are very few artists you can put on after Massive Attack that can maintain that level of production and songwriting. Having just read that back I’m aware PROJECTOR would have to be opening on this bill.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’m a big fan of the LA alt-pop scene, including the stuff that PSY music and Chloe Chaidez are putting out. I like how collectives in that subculture are all-encompassing in terms of music/art/dance/visuals; it's just a group of passionate, creative people making interesting art in various forms. There are lots of collectives like these in activist scenes - famously Pussy Riot - and groups such as Crack Cloud, formed of former drug-users and mental health workers looking for a creative outlet. That being said, I can’t draw for sh*t.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Leonardo Da Vinci. I am a huge fan of The Da Vinci Code and I’d love to know how he did it.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
One of my favourite venues I’ve been to is Electric Brixton. I love the sound, layout and transport links of that room. Although, the mountainous landscape behind the main stage at Green Man festival has to be one of the best backdrops for live music. As for venues I’ve played, The Lexington in London has probably been my favourite - or King Tut’s in Glasgow actually, for the accents.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Daniel Ek. Just such a selfless guy. My favourite track would have to be something by any of the fake artists that get tactically placed on Spotify playlists, designed to funnel money back into Mr Ek’s pocket. I love those ones, so catchy.

The first track you played on repeat?
'Complicated' by Avril Lavigne.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Deep Blue ' by Arcade Fire.
One record you would keep forever?
'El Mal Querer' by Rosalía. I’m going to learn Spanish from this album the way Europeans learn English by watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S, and I’m going to be incredibly sexy as a result.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Don't send those long paragraph texts.
Stop it, don't”
'I Do This All The Time' by Self Esteem.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Lost in Music' by Sister Sledge.
A song you wished you had written?
'A Case Of You' by Joni Mitchell. To add insult to injury, my little sister sings this far better than I ever will.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Daddy Don’t Take My Phone' by Kitten.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Echoes' by Calibre.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Concrete Gold' by Wu Lyf.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Angel' by Comanavago.
'Backseat' by Sfven.
'The World’s Biggest Paving Slab' by English Teacher.
'Creative Jealousy' by Honeyglaze.
'@elio.irl' by ELIO.
'Wet Dream' by Wet Leg.
'Beautiful Soul' by Katy J Pearson.
