03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Cameron Palmer or Swindle, and I’m from South London via Croydon currently residing in Kent.

Describe your style in three words?
'70s rude boy' in my head but I spend so much in the studio that I like to be really comfortable. I wear a lot of tracksuits.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Recently Yussef Dayes at Across the Tracks – he’s such a rockstar! I did go to a really intimate George Clinton show where he cut some music live to vinyl – that was pretty special. Nas with Erika Badu and Damien Marley at the O2 also stands out.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. No further explanations needed!

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Graffiti.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Nelson Mandela. My family went to see him when he came to Brixton in 1996 and all bought the t-shirts - so much wish I’d kept mine!

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Paradiso in Amsterdam for the gravitas, and Unit in Tokyo for the vibe. I’ve never seen a dance floor as exciting as that anywhere in the world.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I’m going to say my bro, Joel Culpepper.

Swindle will release his new album 'THE NEW WORLD' on 29th October 2021. You can pre-order and pre-save it via swindle.lnk.to/thenewworldID.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Gangsta's Paradise' by Coolio. I remember just loving it straight away and persuading my parents to let me buy it because it had a parental guidance sticker. I discovered 'Pastime Paradise' by Stevie Wonder off the back of that, which is still one of my favourite songs ever.

A song that defines the teenage you?
When I was fourteen I loved 'Alien Girl' by Ed Rush and Optical. Just looking at the vinyl now, I loved Prototype records. What happened to drum and bass man! They don’t make them like they used to.

One record you would keep forever?
'Songs In The Key Of Life' by Stevie Wonder or 'Mr Hands' by Herbie Hancock. I couldn’t decide between the two of those.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Don't care what the world say,
I'n'I gonna have things our way"

From 'Natty Dread' by Bob Marley.

"They say your attitude determines your latitude"

Kanye West featuring on 'Brand New' by Rhymefest.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Workin' Day and Night' by Michael Jackson.

A song you wished you had written?
I am never envious of other people, I just appreciate what they do. I do me.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Where I’m From' by The Game.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Dancing in the Moonlight' by Toploader is such a banger. When I first heard it I thought it was an old Black man singing, and then I saw the video!

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'At Last' by Etta James.

Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Tune' by Emmavie.
'Shoreditch' by Deyah.
