03Interview

Name, where are you from?
H: I'm Harvey and I'm from a tiny place called Denham just outside of Uxbridge.
R: Rhys (Everyone You Know), sunny old Sandhurst.

Describe your style in three words?
H: Casuals, Mod's, Sportswear.
R: Heritage. Classics. British.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
H: Probably Jay-Z & Kanye West when they did that Watch The Throne Tour. Went with my old man, must have been about 13 at the time and it was the absolute b*llocks.
R: I would have to give it to The Prodigy I think. Me and Harv took our old man to see them last year at Ally Pally, it was the b*llocks.

If you could be on a line up with any two bands in history?
R: Arctic Monkeys and Wu-Tang Clan. They are two of my favourite artists of all time, so to be on a line up with them would be mad. I think it would be an unusual lineup and it would properly boot off. Plus I've never had the chance to see either of them live...

Which subcultures have influenced you?
H: I've grown up with my family wearing loads of casual brands and my grandparents wearing loads of Mod gear so I'd have to say Casuals and Mods have had the biggest influence on me when it comes to what I wear.
R: Growing up I took a lot of influence from 90's East Coast Hip-Hop and everything that evolved from that. But also The Mods, '90s Rave, Punk, UK Hip-Hop. You can see all the influence in the way I dress, the music, the lyrics and the live performances. We grew up with so many different influences around us, it was hard to just slot into one scene.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
H: David Bowie, simply because he had such an influence on millions of people and was never afraid to express himself. He was and still remains an icon.
R: That's a good question. There are so many people it could be for me. I think at the moment I would say Bob Marley though. He was just such a genuinely talented and intelligent man. I would love to just hear him play a couple of tunes live too.

Of all the venues you have been to or played, which has been your favourite?
R:
I'm gonna have to say, Ally Pally. Again, just because of that Prodigy show. I think playing there would be top-draw.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
R: Jehst. I think he is one of the greatest UK rappers of all time and fully helped pioneer the UK Hip-Hop scene, but is never mentioned when people talk about best UK MC's. I think for someone that has done so much, he isn't appreciated enough.

Everyone You Know released their acclaimed debut EP 'Cheer Up Charlie' in October 2018.

Listen to 'The Drive', it's the first track to be taken from their upcoming second EP 'Look After Your Pennies' below.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
H: 'Whoa' by Black Rob.
R: There are a million tunes I could say to be fair. Growing up music was on non-stop. But one tune that is standing out is 'Music' by Erick Sermon. The Marvin Gaye sample in that tune is perfect.

A song that defines the teenage you?
H: 'Irony Of It All' by The Streets.
R: 'A Certain Romance' by Arctic Monkeys.

One record you would keep forever?
H: '54-46 Was My Number' by Toots & The Maytals.
R: 'Ready To Die' by Biggie Smalls. Literally grew up on this album. It's one of my old man’s favourites. Any tune from that album would qualify for this playlist but I'm gonna go for 'Ready To Die'.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
R: The whole second verse in 'P's and Q's' by Kano. It hasn't inspired me in life, but it did inspire me to pick up a pen and start writing lyrics. That verse is flawless.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
H: 'Gangsters' by The Specials.
R: 'Witness The Fitness' by Roots Manuva. Speaks for itself. Banger!

A song you wished you had written?
H: 'Redbone' by Childish Gambino.
R: 'These Arms Of Mine' by Otis Redding. It's just a beautiful tune. So much emotion in the delivery. That genre and style of music can never be recreated.

Best song to turn up loud?
H: 'Club Foot' by Kasabian.
R: 'Town Called Malice' by The Jam. Stick that tune on ANYWHERE and it will go off. Everyone knows it.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
H: 'Friend Zone' by Thundercat.
R: 'You Can Call Me Al' by Paul Simon. I ain't got a clue why people wouldn't expect me to like it to be honest. But it's a belter!

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
H: 'Papua New Guinea' by Future Sound Of London.
R: 'Champagne Supernova' by Oasis. If you ain't wrapping up a heavy night with that tune you’re doing it wrong. That tune brings everyone together!

Any new bands/artists you are listening to right now?
H: 'Breakfast' by Banton.
R: I must admit I've not been listening to much new stuff recently. I tend not to when I'm working on our own music. But there is a fella called Banton that opened for us at our last headline show who is f*cking wicked.
