03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Subcultural. Smart. Mine.

The first track you played on repeat?

Edwin Starr - Twenty Five Miles

Classic Northern Soul track played at every scooter rally and do since I came to the scene in the 1980s. A floor-filler.

A song from your favorite album?

Boris Gardiner - Elizabethan Reggae

Classic Trojan album - top track. Simple but not on so many levels. Sit back and chill.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Judge Dread - Big Six

Judge Dread - a memorable character with equally memorable gigs! Lyrics lack finesse but he was a local lad to us and had a huge following. A great laugh.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

Roland Russell - Rhythm Hips

My signature tune. Always guaranteed to get me dancing. Played at all gigs I attend as it’s my tune - even have Rhythm Hips tattooed on my arm. Love, love, love it!

A new song you're listening to?

George Dekker - Nana

Heard a version of this promoted on Record Store Day - great tune by a legend!

Best song to turn up loud?

The M.V.P.'s - Turnin' My Heartbeat Up

Cannot be listened to any other way than loud! Stonking track, floor-filler, great dance track that has variation in pace ideal for Northern Soul dancing.

A song that defines the teenage you?

The Velvelettes - Needle In A Haystack

Loved Motown as a teenager which led me into the scooter scene. Today, in my 50s, I still love it! Top Motown track, good dance tune!

An anthemic song?

The Jam - Start!

Everyone from the early '80s mod scene loves this album and 'Start!' Is my favourite track. Sing loud, sing proud!!

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Dean Parrish - I'm on My Way

A chilled Northern Soul dance track, renowned for ending a good night. Everyone sings along even though exhausted! RIP Dean Parrish and thank you for a great tune.
