03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Akira, originally from Japan and Afghanistan, born and bred in Camden.

What do you do?
When I’m not working in a pub, I’m running my brand Buntai, which is a newfound record label and clothing brand. Other than that I’m DJing for way too cheap.

Describe your style in three words?
I couldn’t pin a word down to define my style but - broke and sexy!

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I know this is a festival but, Gorillaz at Boomtown 2018 changed my life, which was then followed thirty minutes later by the other best thing I’ve seen live, Kojey Radical.

If you could be on the lineup with any two bands in history?
If we’re talking strictly bands, I’m gonna have to say Gorillaz, but if I have room to tap into other artists I’ll have to go with Don Toliver. I say these two in particular because, unlike most artists/bands, I never get bored of listening to the same songs by them on repeat.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Growing up, the biggest subculture influence that impacted me was my grunge phase at around thirteen/fourteen, the style hasn’t necessarily stayed with me, but it was the first time I stepped out of the norm, changed how I carried myself and actually dressed how I wanted. In terms of the way I live my life now, it has to be the rave culture I was introduced to at around fifteen, which essentially led me to the position I am in now.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
That is such a hard question and I’ll probably regret it but...in all honesty first thing that came to mind was Kanye, Just to pick his brain. To be honest, the more I think about him the more my brain forgets any other person in the world so I’m gonna have to stick to that.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Haven’t really played at many if I’m honest, gonna have to say, The Cause in Tottenham, it holds a special place in my heart as it was the first club I ever played at.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
My unsung hero in music that deserves so much credit but isn’t given enough has to be Earl Sweatshirt, I have always loved his music and never understood why he wasn’t more widely known - lyrically he is a genius and he should be given the time of day for people to realise that - massive statement but I truly think he is one of the best rappers of our generation.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
I’ve been raised around music from all genres my entire life and have so many songs from early memories that I repeated with my mum as a child, but the first song that really stuck with me as started to become an actual person was 'It’s My Life' by No Doubt.

A song that defines the teenage you?
The song that defines my teenage years and shaped my music taste more than anything is 'High Fashion' by Travis Scott.

One record you would keep forever?
Favourite CD I own is also the first CD I got myself which was a Phil Collins album I don’t even know the name of - I only bought it for 'In The Air Tonight', it was such a long album and I didn’t even listen to any of it - actually wasted £15 now I think about it.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Through the judgments you didn’t see I was fighting for my life, how could I send signs? And God forgive me if I cry, then I’ll become an attention seeker, not a leader”

From 'I Laugh When I’m With Friends' by 070 Shake.

A song you wished you had written?
I wish I wrote '10:30am' by Potter Payper.

Best song to turn up loud?
Can’t believe I’m saying this but it’s gotta be 'Forever Ever' by Trippie Redd.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
I think everyone who knows me knows I like pretty much anything but boy I love a bit of ABBA man. 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' by ABBA.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
Has to be 'Send Yo' Rita!' by Masego.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
It depends on what kind of night you’ve had, but if I’m coming home with Kai and me and him are slumped off I’ll probably slap on 'Right Now' by King Louie.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
New bands I’m rocking with right now...gotta shout out Nine8 Collective here, I’ve been bumping their stuff for a couple of years but they’re the new wave that needs all the attention right now. 'Pusha' by NiNE8, Nayana IZ, Bone Slim.
