03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Anthony the Soul Boy Flavin, I live in Nottingham but I am originally from London.

What do you do?
I’m currently at college but also work in the best shoemakers' in Nottingham, Peters Shoes. Peter has been handmaking shoes since the 80s and I love working there and sometimes taking the shoes for a spin!

Describe your style in three words?
Full of soul.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
It has to be at the Federation Soul Club or Soul night

If you could put any three bands in history on a line-up, who would they be?
The Jam, The Who, and Jr. Walker & The All Stars.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
The Mods for sure. I love the clothes, style and hair. I wish I could have grown up in the original scene!

What is it about Northern Soul that you love?
It makes me so happy. The music, lyrics, scene and also the community. I love to dance and share the joy of dancing with other people too. Everyone should make time to dance every day.

What is so special about the Northern Soul community?
The people are so friendly and make you feel so welcome. It’s like a big family. And the music is great!

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history, who would it be?
Roger Daltrey from The Who. Everyone knows 'My Generation'.

What is your favourite independent venue?
I love Blackpool Tower. It’s crazy that it’s been a venue for over 100 years, imagine the acts it’s hosted over the years. My favourite was when I went there for the BBC Documentary to meet the soul 'God' Richard Searling, what a legend! So many famous people have danced on that floor.

What is your favourite record store?
Nottingham has so many but I think my favourite has to be Rob’s records, everyone who’s into music knows Rob!

Nottingham’s best-kept secret – any favourite hangout spots?
It has to be Rock City. Probably the best venue for live acts in Nottingham. Sad that it’s not open but I can’t wait to go back and have a dance.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Elvis Presley.
