With the events marking the 40th anniversary of Punk still making headlines towards the end of 2016, Cherry Red Records have taken a look at the more independent punk scene that existed in the late 1970s, outside of the world of big labels, for their latest boxset, 'Action Time Vision'.
The varied artists featured include The Fall, The Damned, 999, Sham 69, U.K. Subs, Joy Division, Adam And The Ants, The Killjoys (whose singer Kevin Rowland went on to form Dexy's Midnight Runners), Riff Raff (featuring a young Billy Bragg), Nipple Erectors (fronted by the Pogues legend Shane McGowan), and many more across its 111 tracks.
The 64-page booklet includes photos (see gallery below) authoritative band biogs and an insightful foreword by journalist Kris Needs, whose credits include biographies of Joe Strummer, Blondie, Suicide and Primal Scream, as well as a period as editor of Zigzag magazine, the influential British music mag which produced the first directory of Indie labels. He also fronted his own punk band, The Vice Creems, in the late 1970s.
'Action Time Vision: A Story of UK Independent Punk 1976-1979', is released by Cherry Red on 9th December.
