"AFROPUNK is defining culture by the collective creative actions of the individual and the group. It is a safe place, a blank space to freak out in, to construct a new reality, to live your life as you see fit, while making sense of the world around you."

One of the most vibrant and exciting festivals on the world's cultural calendar AFROPUNK has always been about more than just the music. This year the London leg of the global initiative sees the event diversify from a two-day music-focused festival to a week-long programme of events that also includes workshops, talks, poetry, spoken word, films and more, taking place across Brixton, one of the UK's most widely acknowledged centres of African and Caribbean cultural history.

The exciting programme peaks in Brixton on Saturday. Live music comes from influential figures such as August Greene, Laura Mvula, Akala and Bakar at Brixton Academy.

Pop Brixton celebrates DIY culture, playing host to Battle Of The Bands, with the final four-way contest taking place between the local finalists at the innovative community venue. The crowned winner, Bob Vylan opens Brixton Academy this Saturday to kick off proceedings perfectly exemplifying the punk spirit that Afropunk stands for.

Fred Perry will be holding a Black / Champagne / Champagne takeover together with South London collective BBZ at Brixton Academy where Bernice Mulenga will be photographing guests. Bernice Mulenga's acclaimed #friendsonfilm project was featured at AFROPUNK Brooklyn last month.

In a time when countless other festivals are becoming contrived consumer driven luxury events, AFROPUNK continues to push into new territory and improve the society around it.
