Georgia

Debut album from multi-instrumentalist/drummer

Tuesday 11th August 2015

One of the most interesting British artists to have emerged of late, Georgia is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter from North West London who has just released her debut, eponymous album; Georgia.

Written, performed and produced by Georgia in its entirety and recorded in her own home-studio, Georgia is the product of two years of obsessive work. The daughter of Leftfield's Neil Barnes, Georgia started learning to play drums at a young age, before enrolling at the London School of Oriental and African Studies where she studied ethnomusicology, no doubt influencing her utterly unique, high concept, genre-crossing art.

Invoking hip hop-infused, hyper-melodic producers such as Rustie, with the high-concept, complex sound-design of Hudson Mowhawke and Flying Lotus, Georgia also builds on the undulating, sophisticated electro-pop sounds of The Knife and Class Actress. Mix in a little west London dub, some post-punk perturbation, and a touch of female-led rap such as Missy Elliot and MIA, and the result is a record full of complexities, intrigues and originality.

'Move Systems', the video for which is above, is a daring, pugilistic track, complete with The Knife-esque vocals, pounding, unpredictable drums by Georgia herself, and ardent lyrics about dishonest 'systems' which surround us all. The video delivers a gritty, mildly dystopian image of London, complete with neon lights, cosmetics shops, pool halls, and soulless dive bars.

The release of 'Nothing Solutions' followed, as the second single on the album. The accompanying video features Georgia being pursued through a dense forest, was directed by Courtney Phillips (MK, Ms Dynamite).
