20 year old Londoner, Joel Compass, released his debut “Astronaut” EP last Summer, via label of the moment, Black Butter, home of amongst others Rudimental, Kidnap Kid and Gorgon City. “Astronaut” was followed in November by the equally well received debut single "Run". The praise for Joel's ‘atmospheric R&B’ sound has been wide, The Guardian stating, for example, "(Joel) has just invented a new paradigm for British R&B".
Citing such diverse direct, and indirect, influences as Pink Floyd, Lemon Jelly and 50 Cent, we took the opportunity to ask Joel to put together a Spotify Playlist for us. Read on to find out more about the tracks Joel has picked.
Easy Star Allstars - Gig In The Sky
I grew up on Pink Floyd and these guys do them real justice. A band that can come up with a title like 'Dubside Of The Moon' is enough of a reason to love this.
Dwele - Hold On
One of my most played; the beat, the melody - this song's just a really good summary of an era of music that I loved.
Algebra - Tug Of War
Just another of a world of madly underrated tracks from the past.
Drake - Hold On
Loving this song, it's a common factor between everyone on earth.
Kwabs - Last Stand
What a song! Kwabs is a friend of mine, but even if we'd never met I would have contacted him after hearing this, the atmospherics and amazing melodies are everything.
Heatwave - Always and Forever
One of my favourites. The melody and lyrics, the dynamic of the song and this guys voice is undeniably amazing.
Magnetic Man, Angelea Hunte - I Need Air
This song along with a few others changed music for me production-wise, It made me realise that there can be a balance in genres and in the different worlds of music.
Childish Gambino - 3005
Have been a fan of childish for a while, his flow on this track is crazy and although there are other rappers that I'm into as well, Childish doesn't just have tracks, he's got songs.
50 Cent - 21 Questions
A timeless classic.
