Sophie & The Giants

Monday 7th January 2019

Name, where are you from?
Sophie - Staines
Chris - Worcester Park
Bailey - Bournemouth
Toby - South Wales

Describe your style in three words?
Fred Perry, Always.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Recently I went to see a band called Confidence Man in London and it was amazing. Kind of like a big party and it was so well thought through. Every couple of songs the two singers would leave the stage and the other two musicians would play an instrumental while they changed costume which I haven’t seen an upcoming band do for a while. There was never a dull moment, just so much fun, the whole room was moving constantly.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Wolf Alice, hearing them for the first time made me feel amazing and that’s what music is all about. I love everything about them, their music and identity. It’s refreshing, honest and emotive. Blondie is also my all-time favourite since I was a kid she inspired me to be very career driven and determined with my music. Would be incredible to play on the same stage as Debbie.

Chris: Honestly, for me, I would love to be on a stage with Jamie T as he is my favourite artist. The second artist would be Biffy Clyro, one of my favourite bands and they have the best energetic tunes that I never get bored seeing live.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Sophie: As a band, we have such a broad spectrum of influences. Originally, growing up I listened to a lot of rock and grunge music which dominated my writing style before I started getting into alternative pop. Currently, that is our biggest influence. Growing up I personally have taken influence from late 50s singers such as Connie Francis and The Ronettes, and then also bands such as The Sundays, Siouxsie and The Banshees And Phantogram.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Probably someone like Cleopatra, I’m intrigued by the Egyptians and it’d be a pretty mental experience. Plus I’d like her to give me makeup tips.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
When we played Wiesbaden, (Kulturzentrum Schlachthof) in Germany it was crazy. Huge audience, great reception and we’ve never had such a huge cheer for us after we finished!

Sophie: Probably Kulturzentrum Schlachthof when we were on tour with Tom Grennan! The sound was amazing, also one of the biggest crowds we’ve played to - was just surreal.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
My Grandad! He had an incredible voice, more people should’ve heard it. Never released any music but sang on TV a few times.
