Brooklyn-based duo The Mast (sonic architect Matt Kilmer and vocalist/lyricist Haleh Gafori) has a new album entitled Pleasure Island (on Channel A Records) that is available for free streaming via the band’s SoundCloud page.
Pleasure Island, which follows the debut Wild Poppies, was composed and recorded via laptop as Kilmer was creating music for American television and collaborating with other artists (including indie comedian Reggie Watts and avant-garde cellist Maya Beiser) and Gafori was working on music videos and travelling overseas to recite poetry.
Pleasure Island’s opening track, “Luxor,” is meticulously constructed electro/drum and bass that weaves a fine tapestry for Gafori’s breathless vocal. The album’s other highlights include the hypnotic “Raining Down” (which owes a sonic debt to Massive Attack and Portishead), the poppier, techno number “Cliff,” the sparse, robotic “Voices,” the Eastern-inflected “Nuclear Dragon,” ambient, 140 BPM stunner “UpUpUp” and album closer “Seas Across Your Mind.”
To celebrate the release of Pleasure Island, The Mast will play New York City's Mercury Lounge on 8 February with fellow New Yorkers Archie Pelago confirmed as the opening act. More dates in support of the album will be announced shortly.
