03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Tayler Prince-Fraser, London born and bred.

What do you do?
First and foremost I do a lot of creative work with brands, and I run Last Pick Athletics Club with my brother. It’s an initiative to get young people engaged with exercise. We were both overweight as kids and got bullied for it, I became anorexic and got bullied for that. I wanted to better myself but didn’t realise that by getting physically fit it would also improve my mental wellbeing. So, I want to help people get to that stage of being confident and healthy within themselves without going through the crappy parts that we went through.

Describe your style (dress sense) in three words?
Eclectic, Black, Convenient.

What music defines the teenage you?
Being mixed race, and growing up at a school which was predominantly white – part of my music taste was me subconsciously trying to fit in. I’d listen to indie rock like My Chemical Romance. Then when I went to high school, I’d listen to a bit of grime, but at the end of nights out, we’d be listening to Wonderwall or Mr Brightside at every party.

At college, music helped me identify who I was, so I started to listen to Chris Brown and Trey Songz and, while they may not be the best role models it introduced me to what my race was or one racial aspect of it. It set me off, I’m not ‘here’ and I’m not ‘here’, these people look like me. It’s weird, but it got me exploring hip-hop and RnB.

A British musician or someone who inspires you?
I get inspiration from people – I’ve never had the fascination of idolising superstars really.

What was the last piece of music you bought?
It’s an Italian composer, Ludovico Einaudi and the album is called ‘In a Time Lapse.’ It’s piano. I started to teach myself the piano when I was travelling in Australia. One of the places I stayed at had a piano and I taught myself ‘Run’ which is off that album.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
I think it was Eminem. I can’t remember how I got the album, as I was about ten, but I really, really wanted Marshall Mathers LP 1. The intro had the most swearing, it was the intro to his first mixtape.

A song from your favourite album?
I have to listen to a full album. I can’t just listen to an album when I get it, I have to be ready to listen to the whole album. I haven’t even listened to Drake’s new album, or Frank Ocean’s 'Blonde'.

'Wisemen' off 'Back to Bedlam' by James Blunt. We started to listen to it when my parents broke up, that album was always playing so I have nice memories of it.

A song you wished you had written?
Citizen Cope – 'Sideways'. Probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

The best love song of all time?
This is an easy one. There’s a scene in Notting Hill when Hugh Grant climbs over the fence and the song playing is Ronan Keating – 'When You Say Nothing at All'. That, or maybe Maxwell – 'Pretty Wings'.

What’s the best song to end an all-nighter?
'Mr Brightside' by The Killers.

The best song to bring people together?
For me, it would probably be 'Wonderwall', just because when I was younger everyone at the party would know all the words and everyone would sing along.

A song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
I remember when I started playing classical piano music in the office, people were like "What the fuck are you listening to this for?" I also like EDM music and indie. It’s pretty varied.

Any new artists you’re listening to right now?
Juice WRLD. 'Candles' is a good track. It reminds me of the indie/rock I used to listen to, but meets hip hop.
