03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Bleach Lab (Frank Wates (guitarist), Jenna Kyle (singer), Josh Longman (bassist) and Kieran Weston (drummer), originally from Buckinghamshire but now based in London and Brighton.

Describe your style in three words?
Grungey. Muted. Dark.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
F: massive attack at Brixton academy. Musically fantastic and with incredible accompanying visuals that were very politically charged and thought-provoking.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
F: Cocteau Twins. massive influence over our sound, beautiful soundscapes. Would have loved to see them live.
Je: Fleetwood Mac. I’m not sure if it needs an explanation, It’s Fleetwood Mac!

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Shoegaze and dream pop, '80s/'90s nostalgia, alternative rock.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Jo: I would spend an hour with Neil DeGrasse Tyson and talk to him about space and the universe.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
The Crescent in York - writing this as we travel back from playing there. Just such a lovely venue. The sound quality was excellent. The venue itself was very old school and felt like a much-loved community space. They served amazing pies and had an unbelievable amount of games consoles.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
F: Nadine Shah - she is doing a huge amount at the moment to remind everyone of the dangers women face purely for being women and the need for better protection. She shared pictures of her recent assault which was insanely brave.

Bleach Lab recently released their new EP 'Nothing Feels Real'. Listen, purchase or stream it via https://linktr.ee/bleach_lab.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Soon' by My Bloody Valentine.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'The Ghost Of You' by My Chemical Romance.

One record you would keep forever?
'22, A Million' by Bon Iver.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
Jo: "There's a lover in the story / But the story's still the same / There's a lullaby for suffering / And a paradox to blame / But it's written in the scriptures / And it's not some idol claim / You want it darker / We kill the flame"

From 'You Want it Darker' by Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen has always been a huge inspiration to be lyrically, especially his poetry but in terms of his music I have always loved this track and this verse in particular.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Rasputin' by Boney M.

A song you wished you had written?
'Delete Forever' by Grimes.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Play The Greatest Hits' by Wolf Alice.

Best song to bring people together?
'Love Generation' by Bob Sinclair (our pre-gig hype song).

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Digital Bath' by Deftones.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Moth' by Burial & Four Tet.

Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Disco' by Geese.
'House Of Mirrors' by Softcult.
'Blue' by Lucy Blue.
