03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Charlie Noiir, Toronto. It doesn’t get much more Toronto, rap wise, than 'Live Up To My Name' by Baka Not Nice. It embodies an energy that is so Toronto it’s hard to explain if you not from here.

Describe your style in three words?
Catchy, eclectic, melodic.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Showcase in Atlanta for A3C was a rememberable one for us.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands or artists in history?
Kanye West. The live shows he puts together are like new worlds and who wouldn’t want to be a part of that.

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I pull from everything and anything nothing specific.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history
Nipsey Hussle. I feel like was an inspiration for me, not only for his music but how he spoke. Dude stood tall and did a lot for his community. More to do and say. Even just an hour talking with him I could learn a lot.

Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Parts N Labour in Toronto on queen street. Even though it’s a bar it gives basement jam vibes. Love that energy.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Don’t have one but I guess if I had to pick it would be Jay/Nas.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'This Can’t Be Life' by Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel and Scarface. Embodies a time in my youth when hip-hop really soundtracked my everyday.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Slippin’' by DMX. Being brought up in the church I found a lot of parallels in the fabric of DMX and also in myself and felt like introspective records like these really spoke to me on a real level.

One record you would keep forever?
'To Zion' by Lauryn Hill. The song speaks for itself.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“What good is a team if everyone depends on you / hope opportunity don’t knock with opportunists in your crew”

From 'U Dont Got A Clue' by Nipsey Hussle. Like I mention earlier, dude was not only a great artist but one of the great speakers/minds of our time. The things he said held weight and meant something more in real life and that resonates heavily with me.

A song you wished you had written?
'Excitement' by Trippie Redd ft PARTYNEXTDOOR. The melodies on this joint OOOUUUWEEEE.

Best song to turn up loud?
'You Ain’t Outside' by Pilla B. Westside Toronto sh*t. You gotta be from here to truly feel it. What is understood cannot be explained I guess.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Something About The Name Jesus' by Kirk Franklin. If you knew my story, this might not be as surprising but yeah I get down with gospel music.

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Palance' by JW AND BLAZE. Being a Caribbean Toronto kid, this is the soundtrack to summer for us.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'The Drive' by Charlie Noiir. Nothing better to drive from downtown back to your ends to.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
'Frienemy' by NorthSideBenji. Kids for next out the city.
