03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Naughty Alice (Alice Haine) from London, UK.

Describe your style in three words?
Fred and Perry.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
A Tribe Called Quest at Bestival 2017. It was the last gig they ever played and they definitely made the crowd feel special. A huge honour to experience. A highlight was 'Can I Kick It?', the last song of the night… great send off!

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
I think the most obvious band for me would be The Specials because I would be able to share the stage with a late friend and mentor; can’t think of anything more amazing and unique. I believe that the frequent trumpet parts in my music will coincide nicely with their vibe! Another completely different experience would be Little Simz. I’ve been a huge fan since the very beginning. It was amazing to sense and share her passion on stage live.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I was your classic tomboy, skater girl obsessed with baggy jeans and beanies. I played football, skated and listened to indie rock for the majority of my teens. I suppose the tomboy stage has never really left me although it’s definitely less extreme. My music taste has changed dramatically but the core of it was definitely influenced by this time of my life.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
As briefly mentioned before, Brad Bradbury (drummer from The Specials) was my neighbour and mentor for many years before he passed away in 2015. I would, no doubt spend the hour with him to share my achievements so far and plans for the future. More importantly to get his words of wisdom and advice.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I haven’t toured as Naughty Alice yet but I was part of numerous bands when I was younger. One particular gig with Couples we played The Dublin Castle in Camden, this renowned venue has been blessed by many greats, including Amy Winehouse.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
There are so many artists out there who deserve more recognition and it’s frustrating to see. For me, I’ve never understood why Sampa the Great isn’t bigger… her flow is next level and she’s great to see live, very captivating.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Purple Rain' by Prince I used to play over and over again, I can picture the speakers and the room I was in.

A song that defines the teenage you?
Definitely all of 'Lungs' by Florence + The Machine, specifically the song 'My Boy Builds Coffins' was repeated a fair few times.

One record you would keep forever?
'Something About Us' by Daft Punk. That bass line will never get old!

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Come on in, close the door and feel the vibe,
We got macaroni and cheese, collard greens and chicken inside,
Can't forget the cornbread,
Talkin' shit with the old heads,
Mama dancin' to some Al Green,
My auntie join her and my daddy said, "Go 'head",
While he shine up his pinkie ring,
Don't forget to close the screen”

From 'Feel The Vibe' by BJ The Chicago Kid, Anderson .Paak. It’s nothing deep but that’s why I like it, when I listen to this song I imagine his family eating dinner and dancing to Al Green which is a nice image and something I can definitely relate to.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
Shamelessly 'Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It' by Will Smith…

A song you wished you had written?
'Pienso En Tu Mirá' by ROSALIA.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Doo Wop (That Thing)' by Lauryn Hill.

Best song to bring people together?
'Macarena' by Los Del Rio… you have no choice.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'I Believe in a Thing Called Love' by The Darkness.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Early' by Joy Crookes.

Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Views' by Noga Erez, Reo Cragun, ROUSSO.
'He’s Not Into You' by ENNY.
'Good Love 2.0' Priya Ragu.
'100,000,000' by BERWYN.
