A Subculture guide to Glastonbury 2014

Wednesday 18th June 2014

Arguably still the king of outdoor festivals, the Glastonbury Festival weekend is approaching fast. With that in mind we take a look at the ever expanding list of stages and line ups, with the aim of giving subculture readers some pointers on what is going on where and when.

Friday 27th June

John Robb - The Crows Nest 14:15

Kick off the weekend with a subcultural education from John Robb, founder of The Membranes and Goldblade and author of books such as 'Punk Rock: An Oral History' and 'The Charlatans: We Are Rock'. John kindly found time to make us a Punk Rock mixtape back in May 2013, which doubles as a 750 word primer for those wanting to know more about punk, but not knowing where to start.

Gorgon City - Sonic 15:25

Once educated, get yourself into the festival mindset by immersing yourself in the bass of Gorgon City, filmed here at Sub-Sonic Live late last year.

Billy Bragg - Left Field 21:00

If you're at Glastonbury when Billy Bragg is playing, and you're not going to see him, you're probably doing something wrong.

The Selecter - Avalon Stage 23:15

Queen of Ska, Pauline Black and The Selecter return to festival stages to delight Rudeboys and Rudegirls of all ages. Get in the mood with the Spotify playlist that Pauline Black put together for us earlier this year.

Saturday 28th June

Wolf Alice - John Peel Stage 16:00

Weather permitting the blissful alt-rock sound of Wolf Alice should prove the perfect fit for this Saturday afternoon slot. Watch their recent performance of 'Blush' at Dot to Dot below:

Clean Bandit - John Peel Stage 18:15

The last 6 months have seen Clean Bandit rocket from electro-classical experiment to international chart topping status. Here they perform their number 1 hit 'Rather Be' shortly before its release at Sub-Sonic Live in December 2013, sure to become one of the anthems of this festival season.

Jake Bugg - Other Stage 22:30

A firm favourite of Subculture readers, Jake Bugg returns to a Glasto stage to make it his own. We were lucky enough to capture Jake Bugg's very first main-stage festival appearance back in May 2012.

Sunday 29th June

Darlia - John Peel Stage 11:00

Relative newcomers to the flourishing newly rejuvenated British alternative rock scene, Darlia are a band to watch over the 2014 festival season and beyond. Here they perform their guitar driven crowd pleaser 'Queen Of Hearts' at Dot to Dot 2014.

Hollie Cook - Gully Outer National 14:45

Few people have made sweeter reggae infused pop music than Hollie Cook in 2014. We leapt at the chance to interview her about music, punk and her Sex Pistol father back in April. Read the interview here.

The Horrors - Other Stage 17:20

Needing little introduction, and full of other worldly grandeur, The Horrors were a band made to play Glastonbury. Here they are playing at our own Sub-Sonic Live back in December 2011.

The Beat - Gully Outer National 20:00

Those that go to see The Selecter may also wish to see another 2-Tone era band take to the festival stage. The Beat would eventually become two bands, The English Beat, led by Dave Wakeling and primarily performing in the US, and The Beat led by Ranking Roger. Here we have the Ranking Roger line up.
