Signed to Eddie Piller's Acid Jazz label, DEXTERS return with their second album We Paid For Blood, released 25th September 2015, following on from their debut album released only last year.
Recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studio in Wales earlier this year with producer Nick Brine (who has worked with such bands as Stone Roses, Oasis, Bruce Springsteen and The Verve amongst others) watch the exclusive premiere of the 'making of' video for DEXTERS' epic new album We Paid For Blood, below.
We Paid For Blood is a bold, dark title, initially intriguing as to why this album was so named. However, upon listening, it is clear the music reflects such a title. Laden with angst-fuelled, sinister passion and an array of different guitar and vocal styles, We Paid For Blood is a disquieted, insightful masterpiece. But it is arguably the lyrics of some of the songs, where the true dark nature of the album can be fully understood. The title track is an emotive, progressive tune, complete with string accompaniments, highlighting Tom Rowlett's exceptional vocal ability as well as the band's capacity for complex, intricate production and performance, whilst achieving anthemic status. ‘Your Lovely Wife’ is a unique and bleak, stripped back country-inspired indie tune about a wife who poisons her husband.
We Paid For Blood is a sophisticated medley of inventive, cultivated songs, truly demonstrating the East London band's ability to craft a range of styles. Whilst the title may invoke an expectation for a heavier sound, the intricacies of their song-writing and craft are far from hidden amongst layer upon layer or distortion or reverb. The album is all at once sophisticated and enlightened, dark and lighthearted, and theatrical and jovial.
Tom adds “We've grown as a band, this album is a huge step forward in both sound and lyrics. There's a message, there's a social conscience, reacting to the shit that's happening around us. We love music, being on tour, playing to our fans (and meeting new ones), getting away from the boring side of life; shit jobs, no money, life is hard. This is escapism, it's fun, it's rock n roll”.
