Best Musical Moments

Following on from an emotional surprise performance at the Manchester One Love concert at the beginning of June 2017 plus the release of his debut solo single, Liam Gallagher - the former frontman of Oasis and Beady Eye - is firmly back in business.

A small sold-out tour culminated with a stand-out set on the Other Stage at Glastonbury 2017. The Glastonbury performance culminated in a powerful rendition of the Oasis tune 'Don't Look Back In Anger', a song which is normally sung by Noel but has recently become an anthem for Mancunian defiance in the wake of recent events.

So, we take a look back at ten of the rock n roll star's best musical moments.

SUPERSONIC
Oasis
Definitely Maybe (1994)

'Supersonic' was the debut single by Oasis and at the 30-second mark, we are introduced to one of the most recognisable voices in rock n roll history. The track was born out of a jam session while Oasis were supposed to be recording 'I Will Believe' and was then fully written and recorded in a single day.

SCORPIO RISING
Death In Vegas
Scorpio Rising (2003)

A neo-psych belter from the electronica outfit Death In Vegas. This was the first time people had heard Liam's singing recorded on anything other than Oasis records and it convincingly proved how felicitous his vocals really are.

SONGBIRD
Oasis
Heathen Chemistry (2002)

Whilst 'Songbird' was not the first Oasis song to be written by Liam, it was the first song written by Liam to be released as a single. An uplifting tune showing Liam's lighter side, it was written about his fiancée at the time, Nicole Appleton of All Saints.

WHATEVER
Oasis
Single (1994)

The non-album single that bridged the gap between 'Definitely Maybe' and 'What's the Story' was released just before Christmas in '94. Liam bellowing about personal freedom paired with string arrangements (performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra) is spine-tingling.

THE ROLLER
Beady Eye
Different Gear, Still Speeding (2011)

Another Liam-penned track that was originally considered for 'Heathen Chemistry'. The first (proper) single from Beady Eye, Liam's crooning through this track showed everybody there was life after Noel indeed.

CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVA
Oasis
(What's the Story) Morning Glory (1995)

A bonafide Oasis anthem and perhaps an obvious choice, but not much can come close to Liam's soaring vocals on this track. This is a frequent choice for 'The best song to bring people together?' in our Playlist features.

SHOOT DOWN
The Prodigy
Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (2004)

The closing track on the fourth album from big beat pioneers The Prodigy. A track that further showcases Liam's versatility with his sneering vocal delivery suiting the aggressive dance-punk vibes of the track perfectly.

CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE
Oasis
Don't Look Back In Anger - Single (1996)

Oasis always had cover songs in their repertoire, usually favouring '60s rock n roll hits by the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. But it's this cover of the 1973 Slade hit that really blows the original out the water.

MORNING GLORY
Oasis
(What's the Story) Morning Glory (1995)

The title track from Oasis' second album, a record with a bigger production and wider emotive range than their debut. A set up which seemed perfectly served in order to amplify Liam's vocals to an almost majestic level.

WALL OF GLASS
Liam Gallagher
As You Were (2017)

After retreating from the public eye and music in general for a few years after Beady Eye split in 2014, Liam's triumphant return was marked with his first single as a 'solo' artist. His voice and his swagger remaining as compelling as it has always been.

Liam Gallagher’s debut solo album ‘As You Were’ will be released on 6th October.
