Depth of Field is the latest single taken from Memory Maze’s debut album From The Outside In (set for release in early 2015). Its predecessor Like A Mirage was one of Zane Lowe’s ‘Next Hype’ tracks on Radio 1, while the single also found its way also into The Guardian’s new band Playlist and Q’s ‘Five Songs to Hear This Week’ column after premiering on Clash music.
Memory Maze is the work of Yorkshire-born, London-based musician and producer Gavin Ellis. His mission with the forthcoming debut album From The Outside In was to create guitar music that would sound good on pills. Not the rave kind, more the dreamy kaleidoscopic guitars found in the production work of David Fridman (Tame Impala, MGMT, Mercury Rev). It’s music built on warm layers, expansive-yet-intimate moments, where chorused guitars blend with dreamy synths.
While Like A Mirage leaned towards a more laid back, pop-tinged melancholia, new single Depth of Field offers an alternative side to Memory Maze, where prominent guitar lines and driving drums mix with seasick synths.
Depth of Field is released digitally on 13th October via Infinite Jest Records. Memory Maze’s debut album From The Outside In follows in early 2015.
