Paul Weller releases the last, but by no means the least, single from his unanimously critically acclaimed album Saturns Pattern.
The precision-tooled Memphis style soul funk of “Pick It Up” was released today (December 18th).
Talking about Pick It Up, Paul explains:
“I was trying to get a Meters vibe to it. Stan (the producer) had a drum loop and I put a funky guitar on it and that was all we had for a while. Eventually we pieced it all together. "Whatever shatters pick it up": pretty straight-forward message.”
The video for “Pick It Up” features actor Martin Freeman performing some rather surreal DIY in an orange jumpsuit and wielding a chainsaw. Ben Smallwood – an up and coming director – was interested in making a video and a cheeky phone call from Paul to Martin Freeman asking if he fancied being the star cemented the deal. Watch below:
Pick It Up will be released on 7” vinyl and as a 2-track Download / Stream, backed by a previously unreleased Dub Mix. A special 7” bundle via paulweller.com includes an exclusive bonus 7” including the previously unreleased track “On Days Like These” b/w “Praise If You Wanna” which was previously only available on Japanese formats of the Saturns Pattern album.
