Subculture Seldom Seen: 'The La's 1987'

Photo Exhibition & Rarities Album Release

Tuesday 10th October 2017

“Jake Summerton was one of the first people to take photos of The La’s. I remember him being a ball of energy. He knew he was capturing a magical time and had the eye to do it. I’m extremely pleased he is now getting the credit he so rightly deserves." - The La's Guitarist, Paul Hemmings

In 1987, trailblazing Liverpool indie band, The La's, were due to record their hugely significant debut album and embark on their first tour. A formative period for The La's, and the early evolution of the British indie scene, 1987 was the year in which the band wrote songs such as 'Timeless Melody', 'Way Out', and of course 'There She Goes'.

The band were accompanied on many of their early adventures by their friend and photographer, Jake Summerton, who recently discovered a long-lost and previously unseen collection of his photos of the band from 1987, including the first performance of 'There She Goes' at The Marquee Club in London. Capturing the spirit of the band and the period, the images now form 'The La's 1987', an exhibition marking The La's 30th anniversary.

“The small intimate stage, low lights, loud music, exotic smells, Lee’s voice, all fused together to make a gig branded into memory. At that point, the band were so good, I just had to get it on film." - Jake Summerton
