The Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley Music Grant

July 2021

Calling all unsigned UK artists – the Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley music grant is back. Submit your work and you could win a two-day masterclass with Metropolis Studios.

The British music industry is in a difficult place right now. The ongoing pandemic has meant that aspiring artists are having to find alternative routes to make waves in the music scene. The Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley music grant will give one lucky artist or band the support they need to hone their craft and get their music out into the world.

“Music is the unifying force between our brands and plays a key role in each collaboration collection. That is why during a time when the music industry is under great threat we decided to pull together and offer the music grant to support the next generation of musicians here in the UK.

I have pulled together a diverse and experienced judging panel who will bring their expertise within the industry to select our grant winner." Nicholas Daley

Nicholas Daley has selected a panel of five industry experts to judge the entries. This includes musicians Nilufer Yanya and Nubya Garcia, DJ’s, Broadcasters and Record Label Founders Bradley Zero and Gilles Peterson, and music writer Tara Joshi.

“Breaking through those first hurdles is hard enough as it is within the music industry, and this has been magnified with the pandemic. Opportunities to be seen and heard exist online for those with a foot on the ladder but for the newcomers waiting to make their first step, the opportunities for exposure and mentorship have been scarce. The element of chance has all but disappeared- it’s hard to have a lucky break when there’s no stage for someone to see you warm up.

Initiatives like this provide a life line for artists looking to break out of their bubble and get their voices heard on a larger platform. A&R, to me, is about elevating unheard voices and maximising their reach - and that’s exactly what I believe we can achieve with this project.” Bradley Zero

As founder of the Rhythm Section institution, Bradley has carved out a unique role for himself within the vibrant London scene as Resident Club DJ, Broadcaster and Label Boss of one of the most exciting new imprints today – Rhythm Section International. Having started the Rhythm Section radio show back in 2009, the broadcast naturally translated into a fortnightly dance at Canavan’s Peckham Pool Club, which quickly became a firm fixture in the London Clubbing scene. Resident Advisor and Dummy described it as “A party which, in spite of its modest means and ambitions, has been something of an epiphany for me, and for plenty of others too” and “some of the best music in London” respectively.

Starting by installing illicit transmitters and hosting shows for pirate radio station Radio Invicta, he later joined the newly-founded Jazz FM and pirate-turned-legal station Kiss FM. In 1998, he was hired by BBC Radio 1, where he hosted a weekly show until his move to his current slot on BBC Radio 6 Music.

He has been behind several game-changing record labels. Firstly, he founded Acid Jazz in the late eighties, and in the early nineties he started Talkin’ Loud where five of the albums on the label were nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. His current venture is Brownswood Recordings and as a curator and collector, he’s compiled over 100 albums.

In 2011, he founded the Steve Reid Foundation in memory of the legendary jazz drummer. The charity supports musicians who are ill and facing financial difficulties and, jointly with the PRS Foundation, runs the Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award, which has supported upcoming artists such as Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and Sarathy Korwar.

Since 2005, he has hosted the annual Worldwide Awards in London and Worldwide Festival in Sète, France, and in 2019, he launched the new We Out Here festival in the UK.  In early 2021, Gilles released the Str4ta album (with Bluey from Incognito) and his first full length book ‘Lockdown FM - Broadcasting In A Pandemic’.
