03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Charlie from London, Hackney, frontman of Roscoe Roscoe.

Describe your style in three words?
Hippy, smart, casual.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Connan Mockasin at The Southbank Centre in 2016, It was the first time I had seen him and I was completely obsessed with him at the time.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd because of the crazy crowd of freaking out hippies they’d attract and Ziggy Stardust Bowie because why not.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
'60s Mod subculture, maybe '90s skater subculture.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Spend an hour at Abbey Road with George Martin, bonus points if The Beatles are in session.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Has to be Shacklewell Arms, 10 mins from home and always have fun playing there.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Jeff Lynn and ELO, they have some serious bangers that are underplayed because of 'Mr Blue Sky' and they’re seriously impressive live. Underrated composer/songwriter.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
probably 'Bohemian Rapsody' by Queen, first listened to it when I was about 8/9 and was completely blown away by it, I didn’t know songs were allowed to go that nuts.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Reasons to To Be Cheerful' by Ian Dury. I went through a huge phase of listening to him when I was younger and he seemed to define some kind of rebellious teen in me.

One record you would keep forever?
'Lonerism' by Tame Impala, first album that I fell in love with and defined my music taste, I always find myself coming back to it and it never fails to conjure weird euphoric, nostalgic feelings.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
A lyric that I really love and has inspired me is from 'I Want To Tell You' by The Beatles. I really love the theme of this track and the way the lyrics are written and performed, specifically, a lyric that seemed to stick with me is:

“If I seem to act unkind, it’s only me it’s not my mind, that is confusing things.”

It’s quite a conventional love themed lyric but there’s something about it that I just really love and the way it’s executed just makes me sing it on repeat. Another lyric from that same song I love is:

“I want to tell you, I feel hung up but I don’t know why. I don’t mind, I could wait forever, I’ve got time.”

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
At the moment would be 'Aaj Shanibar' by Rupa. Fantastic disco diva band from Bengal, comes up a lot at the moment if I’m on the aux.

A song you wished you had written?
Difficult to choose but 'God Only Knows' by The Beach Boys, incredibly complex songwriting and just an overall banger.

Best song to turn up loud?
Has to be 'Iron Man' by Black Sabbath. Sick riff, big tune.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Bit of a random one but 'Petey’s Song' from the Fantastic Mr. Fox soundtrack, great song would love to see Jarvis Cocker perform it one day.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
Most funk, disco and soul tunes do the job or any sort of feel-good classic track like 'I Feel Love' by Donna Summer.

Any new music you are listening to right now?

Some new bands I’m listening to at the moment are BC Camplight, great songwriter and lyricist, a good track by him is ‘I Only Drink When I’m Drunk’, a couple other new upcoming bands I really like are alt-indie rock band, Denh Izen and psychedelic pop group, Caramel, who have been doing a lot of cool things from what I’ve seen over lockdown.
