The Rills

Musicians — Lincoln

Name, where are you from?
MS: Mitch Spencer, Lincoln.
MC: Mason Cassar, Essex.
CW: Callum Warner-Webb, Lincoln.

Describe your style in three words?
CW: French and Confused

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
MS: Viagra Boys at Studio 9294 in May 2019. A friend bailed on me so I decided to go on my own under the assumption that I would stand at the back and just enjoy the music… Two songs in and I was head first in the moshpit! It was like I’d been teleported to a peak Doors gig, but not like a real one - like one in the film where people are climbing up the walls and the whole room is about to fall apart. I think I saw Amyl and the Sniffers in there too!

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
MC: The Streets, probably the most influential band for me, skinner is my idol and Squeeze, because that would be a proper hootenanny.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
CW: Even though I try my best not to look like a Mod after absolutely abusing the Gazelles and the Sta-Pressed trousers, I think that sixties mentality still influences me. And I would say more recently I've been loving that utilitarian, workwear aspect to old '90s Hip-Hop trends.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
CW: Bowie. I just know he'd change my life in that one hour.
MS: Friedrich Nietzsche… I mean I can’t speak German, but he has one hell of a tash.
MC: Billy the Kid, imagine having a pint with billy the kid? Think of the stories man, pure cowboy savagery.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
MC: The Old England in Bristol was insane.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
MS: Nick Hodgson, the original drummer in Kaiser Chiefs - the true '00s banger machine, he wrote their best tunes from behind the sticks and I never hear anyone talking about him.

The first track you played on repeat?
CW: 'Magic Dance' by David Bowie.
MS: 'Crystal Ball' by Keane.
MC: 'The Night' by Franki Valli & The Four Seasons.

A song that defines the teenage you?
CW: 'Sorry' by The Paddingtons.
MS: 'Apocalypse Dreams' by Tame Impala.
MC: 'Goldie' by A$AP Rocky.

One record you would keep forever?
CW: 'Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino' by Arctic Monkeys.
MS: 'Unknown Pleasures' by Joy Division.
MC: 'Vini Reilly' by The Durutti Column.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
CW: "I’m not Tony Hancock, Baby"
From 'You're My Waterloo' by The Libertines.

MS: "Home sweet home, home sweet home, home sweet booby-trap, I took the batteries out my mysticism and put 'em in my thinking cap"
From 'The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala' by Arctic Monkeys.

MC: "You will not catch me staring at the sun"
From 'Grounds' by Idles.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
CW: 'Dickhead' by Robbie Williams.
MS: 'Benga Benga' by Ajukaja.
MC: 'Has It Come To This?' by The Streets.

A song you wished you had written?
CW: 'Perfect Day' by Lou Reed.
MS: 'Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)' by Buzzcocks.
MC: 'Samaritans' by Idles. Wicked drums.

Best song to turn up loud?
CW: 'From The Ritz To The Rubble' by Arctic Monkeys.
MS: 'Under The Influence' by Chemical Brothers.
MC: 'Back To Basics' by Headie One ft. Skepta.

Best song to bring people together?
CW: 'It Must Be Love' by Madness.
MS: 'Imagine' by John Lennon.
MC: 'Sweet Caroline' by Neil Diamond. Karaoke version.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
CW: 'Sexed Up' by Robbie Williams.
MS: 'Corinne' by Metronomy.
MC: 'Kill V. Maim' by Grimes.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
CW: 'Samaritans' by Idles.
MS: 'Don’t Look Back Into The Sun' by The Libertines.
MC: 'Heroes' by David Bowie.

Any new bands you are listening to right now?
CW: I'm being held ransom by Sorry and I really like what Do Nothing are doing.
MS: I’m all over Sorry at the minute! Talk Show, ShitKid and Sheer Mag too.
MC: 'Low Ride' by Poppy Adjuhda, saw her with Richard Spaven at the Jazz cafe in Camden, unreal voice.
