03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Simple British grunge

The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?

Blur - Girls and Boys

I got an ipod nano for Christmas when I was younger and listened to Green Day on it but the patriotism I felt from the Brit Pop movement that I was 20 years late to made me want to listen to nothing other than Damon Albarn.

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

Nirvana - Tourette's

I listened to slow, sad music for a while when I was younger and the first time I listened to In Utero as an album was such a shift in pace, it shook me. It carried all this angst and distortion, with Tourette’s being the track I felt honed in on this the most

A song from your most memorable gig?

The Specials - Gangsters - 2015 Remaster

I saw The Specials at the 100 Club with my girlfriend and the crowd just came alive when they played Gangsters. Me being generally socially uncomfortable, it was nice to jump around like an idiot for once.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

The Doors - The Changeling

When Jim shouts and huffs like a mad man it pushes me to throw myself around. The bass line in this song too is just an act of wizadary.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

Pinty - Honey

I love classic Quasimoto tracks with his tone of voice and I found a similar love for Pinty - London based MC. The second track honey off his debut LP was an instant favourite. It had a heavy hitting beat and vocals and production from another favourite - Archy Marshall.

Best song to turn up loud? And why?

Nirvana - D-7 - 1992/Live at Reading

This song makes me want to rob my own house - I listen to it on repeat at collage and whenever I paint - it’s like rocket fuel for my brain.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

Sonic Youth - Incinerate

This song just has this mellow feel to it that has lingered throughout my adolescence. It makes me feel sad and happy and it’s that strange dissonance between the two that sums up teenage emotion.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

The Velvet Underground - Oh! Sweet Nuthin' - 2015 Remastered

It’s a favourite song for both me and my girlfriend and despite it being a little sad, the chorus is such a fun one to just belt out. It’s not hard to sing and the melody is nice and simplistic. A timeless song.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Daniel Johnston - Living Life

Daniel Johnston makes simple songs that never fail to relax me. This song especially, it’s like a burst of joy.
