New Documentary - Android In La La Land

Tuesday 26th July 2016

A new critically acclaimed documentary, "Gary Numan: Android In La La Land" follows Gary Numan, so often heralded as one of the leading pioneers of electro, as he and his family make the huge move from his native home in the UK to California, with the aim of breaking into the music LA scene and film music industry.

Filmed over three years from 2012, described as "part music doc, part road trip and part love story" the film, directed by Steve Read & Rob Alexander, recounts Numan history so far, set against touching personal footage of the family during their move to LA.

From the fateful day that he discovered an abandoned synthesiser in the corner of the studio in which he happened to be working, recording the punk album promised to his record label, Numan along with iconic names such as Kraftwerk, NEU!, Eno and Bowie became credited with setting out the foundations of 80s Electro-pop, Electronica, Electro-clash and the many other forms associated with the synthesiser and its sibling technologies.

Creating commercially successful hit songs such as "Cars", "M.e." and "Are 'Friends' Electric?" Numan shot to fame in the late 70s and early 80s. Initially overcoming his then undiagnosed and misunderstood Asprerger's syndrome, Numan later struggled with depression, anxiety and financial problems, before rebuilding his career in recent years, enjoying a resurgence of popularity and artistic and gaining a new generation of fans.

‘I’ve learnt to cope, but when I was young it was bad. I was famous so quickly, so young; it was daunting. People's perceptions of me were awful. They didn't know what to make of me.’ - Gary Numan
