In 1994, 1995 and 1996 it was difficult to go to a club, festival or cinema in the UK, without in some way being exposed to Underworld's music. Although the period is often associated with the bands of the 'Britpop' movement, Underworld, along with some other electronic dance outfits such as Chemical Brothers and Orbital, became as much a part of the scene as bands like Blur, Pulp and Oasis. The release of 'dubnobasswithmyheadman' with its tracks like 'Cowgirl' tapped into the youthful euphoria that swept the through the UK's 18-25 year olds over successive summers.
This crossover with Indie kids taking to dance-floors and dance artists taking to festival stages has arguably never been undone. It saw songs like 'Born Slippy' included on the soundtrack of the era's defining film, 'Trainspotting', and follow up albums such as 'Second Toughest In The Infants' sit in charts alongside guitars and pop bands of the day. This phenomenon, and other aspects of Underworld's early work, are discussed by Rick Smith and Karl Hyde in a new mini documentary, which you can watch below:

Twenty years after its release 'dubnobasswithmyheadman' is now regarded as a landmark British electronic record, capturing the zeitgeist of festival stages and club culture in the closing years of the 20th Century.
