03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Naicha Mercier, Brooklyn NY.

What do you do?
I work in fashion, mainly in e-commerce doing a bunch of different things. But, I’ve been tapping into photography more and more which takes up the rest of my time.

Describe your style in three words?
Dark mythical grunge.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to in New York?
I saw the band Hyukoh live in 2019, and nothing has topped that yet. It was a surreal experience, just being there by myself and hearing all my favourite songs with complete strangers.

Which American subcultures have influenced you?
Not sure if they are all American but definitely the darkwave, cybergoth, afrofuturistic and occult dance cultures with a hint of Americana.

Best American musician?
The Hellp, maybe not the best but they’re pretty cool to me at the moment.

Where is your favourite independent venue in New York?
The Bowery Electronic, I’ve seen some pretty cool gigs there.

What is the best-kept secret in New York?
King Dumplings on Hester, idk if it’s a secret but they’re the best for fast cheap eats.

Best place to hang out in New York?
I mean NYC is a never-ending hangout spot. But, I still have a fun time hanging out near W 4th.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'In The City' by The Jam. Sounds very cliche but I feel this song perfectly describes what it feels to live in NYC, I can replay this for hours while walking down the street.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Lock and Load' by Milkavelli. I listened to this all throughout high school.

One record you would keep forever?
I found Björk’s 'Debut' vinyl on the street and there’s no way I could ever part with it.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“I feel comfy on my own”

From 'Lock and Load' by Milkavelli. It taught me that I need to seek comfort in myself and value my truest form before anything else.

A song you wished you had written?
'Hey Ya!' by Outkast. It’s such a legendary song and I love how hype everyone gets when it comes on.

Best song to turn up loud?
Any Lil Peep song.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Future Teenage Cave Artists' by Deerhoof. Not sure if people wouldn’t expect it but they’re a more lowkey band I love.

A song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' by ABBA.

Any new bands you’re into at the moment?
• Teke::Teke, IDLES, The I.L.Y’S.
