03Interview

Name, where are you from?
I’m Bakar from Camden, and I make music.

Describe your style in three words:
Baggy, skinny, myself.

What music defines the teenage you?
I don’t think there’s any particular genre, I like a mix of everything. Right now it would be rap, but I hope to change that.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
Everything. My whole iTunes. The music that I’ve made is the answer to that question.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
It was probably something by Jodeci. I don’t know a specific song, but my Mum used to play RnB like Jodeci, 112, Joe – something like that.

A song from your favourite album?
'Blue Light’ by Bloc Party from Silent Alarm.

A song you wish you had written?
A recent song I wish I’d written is ‘Incredible’ by Future.

A British icon that has inspired you?
Skepta, Kele from Bloc Party and Lily Allen.

What was the last piece of music you bought?
I streamed the new Stormzy album quite a lot… I think that’s a really good album.

Most meaningful song that inspires change?
The whole ‘Konnichiwa’ album by Skepta inspired change in myself. It made me feel “alright, we can do this – let's go” about my music and inspired me to go out and do it.

Best song to bring people together?
It’s a Tame Impala song but I can’t remember the name. The whole last Tame Impala album actually.

What is your all-time favourite gig?
James Blake at Glastonbury and then Brixton Academy. Very memorable. I’d really like to see Francis and the Lights live. I watched a gig of theirs on YouTube and that was very memorable.

Best love song of all time?
'Beautiful’ by Pharrell. I know it’s not a traditional love song, but it just feels good.
