SHOPS

Working Class Heroes, Ulverston

AUGUST 2021

We shine a spotlight on some of our most exciting independent stockists around the world. This time we speak with Tom Bowden, the founder and head buyer of Working Class Heroes, just outside of England’s Lake District.

What’s your name and connection to the shop?

Tom Bowden and for my sins I am the founder and head buyer of Working Class Heroes.

Tell us where you are.

Sunny Ulverston just outside The Lake District.

How did the shop come to be?

I was selling yogurts and pies for a well know supermarket and it sucked my will to live. Born out of a desire to do something that was nearly the exact opposite of what I was doing, I founded WCH. It's worked. I believe the supermarket is in administration, so I'm sticking to the plan!

Describe your shop in three words.

What makes your shop so special?

It's not really in a place where you'd except to find a shop like this. You expect it in a city centre, "strategic" site. But we love the fact it's in a quiet market town. Nice and chilled.

Tell us something few people know about your shop?

Not a chance, we might get caught.

Who are your favourite independent neighbours – your record shops and live music venues?

Beerwolf, amazing bar! You'll walk in on your feet and leave on your back. Plus Ripe Eat. It’s the best takeaway munchies in Ulverston.
