03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Benny Sings, from Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Describe your style in three words?
Casual, street, preppy.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
It must have been Phoenix, in Trouw in Amsterdam. It was the time they released the album 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix'. They were at their best. Also, the light show was amazing. Best song was probably 'Armistice'.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Michael Franks – He is one of my big heroes, a true anti-hero. On his website, he poses with his dachshund and has reports of him cleaning the leaves in the garden. And still, one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Paul McCartney – He has written so much, but also so many different genres, and so, so many gems. A true legend.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Hip-hop, skaters, academics.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’d like to spend it with Blossom Dearie. I can’t imagine how witty and awesome she must have been.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
There’s one room on the East Side of Manhattan, New York called the Mercury Lounge. Looks like your regular live room, fits about 200 people. But the sound over there is just... Haven’t heard that anywhere. That was a really special show we played over there.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'It Will Come In Time' by Billy Preston and Syreeta.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Working Day And Night' by Michael Jackson.

One record you would keep forever?
'Pipes Of Peace' by Paul McCartney.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Sure I know you'd like to have me
 talk about my future

And a million words or so to fill you in 'bout my past

Have I sisters or a brother?

When's my birthday, how's my mother?

Well my dear in time I'll answer all those things you ask

But for now I'll just say I love you

Nothing more seems important somehow

And tomorrow can wait come whatever

Let me love you forever but right now
, right now"

From 'But For Now' by Bob Dorough.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'If I Ever Feel Better' by Phoenix.

A song you wished you had written?
'Here You Come Again' by Dolly Parton.

Best song to turn up loud?
'So Whatcha Want' by The Beastie Boys.

Best song to bring people together?
'Rainbow Connection' by Kermit The Frog.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Cold as Ice' by M.O.P.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'A Forest' by The Cure.

Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Supalonely' by Benee.
'So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings' by Caroline Polachek.
'Post Humorous' by Gus Dapperton.
