Name, where are you from?
Dylan Coates, of Peeping Drexels. Born and bred in HOP, South East London.

Describe your style in three words?
Drip or drown.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Death Grips at the Brixton Academy in 2018 is up there. There was no support band, just a couple of hours of dread-inducing white noise while we waited for them to go on stage. They even played sections of 'Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix)' which was f*cking mad to see live.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands or artists in history?
Opening for Primus would be lit. Supporting Grace Jones would bang but how would we ever compare to that. Other than that I have always thought that putting on a night with Lil Peep called 'The Peep Show' would have been pretty jokes. RIP.

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I was a Grime kid. I grew up listening to youtube rips of old pirate radio sets on the way to school. I’ll never forget the first time I heard D Double E spray bars on the 'Ghetto Kyote' beat by Treble Clef.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Dennis Hopper. He’s the GOAT, he was a genius. I'll include 'Opening Scene' from 'The Last Movie' score in the playlist.

Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Out of surviving venues, it has to be The Windmill, but The Five Bells in New Cross holds a special place in my heart. It’s closed down now but I was living across the road from it when it was popping and every event put on there was madness. The mix of Millwall supporters, art students, and crackheads was quite the pungent cocktail.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
The Crusaders are severely underrated. 'Keep That Same Old Feeling' is constantly playing in our yard. I’ve got to mention LUCKI as well, criminally overlooked when it comes to influence on rap music of today, he essentially started the alternative/sad Trap wave.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Uummm!!!' by Giggs. I remember going to Peckham Library with my mum to get the whole 'Walk In Da Park' tape when it came out. I would have been about 9 I think. Simpler times.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Where Is My Knife' by The Amazing Snakeheads. I went to nearly every single one of their London shows when they were together. RIP Dale Barclay.

One record you would keep forever?
'Ordinary Corrupt Human Love' by Deafheaven. Even just the opening track alone.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
All of 'The Carny' by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. The way he conjures up such vivid imagery with his words is great to me. I love lyrics like that.

A song you wished you had written?
'Agony' by Yung Lean or 'The Gift' by The Velvet Underground.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Whole Lotta Red' by Playboi Carti in its entirety. If I had to pick one track it’d be 'On That Time'.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Don't Start Now' by Dua Lipa. Whole album slaps tbh.

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Like A Prayer' by Madonna. or 'F*ck Orff Again Remix' by Luna-C. straight bangers.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Codeine Crazy' by Future.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Paddywaks EP, 'Spacey Daisy'. That slaps. Deep Tan are always dropping heat as well. Jockstrap released one of my favourite projects of last year with that 'Wicked City' EP. Sorry are killing it at the moment too. Always gotta big up the brothers in arms Muck Spreader. Too many to mention.
