Ryan Zaman

Model — London

Name, where are you from?
Ryan Zaman - I’m actually from Stockport (where Fred Perry was from!), but I live in London.

What do you do?
I’m a chameleon - but I don’t eat flies! Right now I’m a model, but I’ll always be a disabilities advocate.

Describe your style in three words?
Nostalgic, relaxed, androgynous.

Which music defines the teenage you?
Teenage years span a long time! Probably some Kygo remix - like the one he did of 'Sexual Healing' back in the day.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
Maybe not a gig - more of a festival, but in the summer of 2018 I went to NYEGE NYEGE in Jinja, Uganda. It was a week-long and it was MENTAL - they held the first Boiler Room in Africa as part of the festival, too, so I think that says a lot about the vibe.

What was the first song you played on repeat?
'Criticize' by Alexander O’Neal. It’s one of my dad’s favourite songs. Me and my brother both love it too. If we’re all round at my dad’s house it’s probably playing loud off the stereo in the kitchen. Close second would be 'The Best Things in Life Are Free' by Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson.

One record you would keep forever?
Hands down it would be SZA’s album 'Ctrl'. I probably listen to that from start to finish once a week.

A song you wish you’d written?
'Hotel California' by The Eagles. I don’t think there’s a song that tells a better story than that!

What’s the best song to drive to?
'Good Drank' by 2 Chainz (ft. Gucci Mane) - what can I say, it gets me gassed haha.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
SG Lewis’s album 'Times' on vinyl - such a groove!

Best love song of all time?
My Funny Valentine by Ella Fitzgerald.

A song that brings people together?
'All Around The World' by Lisa Stansfield.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
'Moonlight Serenade' by Glenn Miller - just a really nice relaxing song to have on before I go to bed sometimes.

What new music/bands are you listening to?
Hēir (aka Patricia Manfield).
