03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Wesley Joseph, from Walsall, England.

What do you do?
I’m an artist, producer and filmmaker.

Describe your style in three words?
Quaint, distinctive, natural.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Kendrick Lamar ‘DAMN’ tour at the O2.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
I could probably answer that question differently a thousand times for different reasons, but based on how I feel right now I’d say Frank Ocean and MF DOOM just because it would a really vivid nostalgic contrast of emotions and presence.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
As dry as it sounds, internet culture. When I was a kid I used to stay on YouTube and Tumblr. Those sites basically taught me everything about music, videos, and opened me up to so many cultures and artists around the world and that got me hype to make and create every day.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Maybe Dave Chappelle or Quincy Jones, I couldn’t say. They’ve both lived such empowering mad lives and had such a profound impact on the world. I feel like every word said I’d cherish, whatever the topic.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Jazz Cafe - it's intimate, but still has a grand feeling. It was also my first time using wireless mics haha.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Maybe Dimlite, my favourite song of his is ’SE SE SC’.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Mas Que Nada' by Sergio Mendez, 'Paris, Tokyo' by Lupe Fiasco or 'Feel Good Inc.' by Gorillaz. I can’t remember which was first.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'The Panties' by Mos Def.

One record you would keep forever?
'The Shining', 'So Far To Go' by J Dilla.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I'm tryna surround myself with people that inspire me or at least inquire similar desires to do what it T-A-K-E just to reach the T-O-P. I’m talking ideas, motivation, it's more than making, enemies my n***a"

From 'Cut You Off (To Grow Closer)' by Kendrick Lamar.

A song you wished you had written?
'Me and Your Mama' by Childish Gambino.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Black Skinhead' by Kanye West.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
It's hard to say what people wouldn’t expect me to like because I’ve always listened to all kinds of music, so not much is unexpected. I’ve been listening to ’Tikjda' by Ahmed Melek and a lot of Habibi Funk lately which might seem random to people who don’t know me.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Grind' by Les Sins.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Morning Sunrise' by Weldon Irvine.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
24 Carat Black.
