Originating in India, Madras cloth was a woven cotton designed to keep you cool in the hottest of climes. Traditionally woven with natural vegetable dyes, the vivid colours and irregular checks later appealed to the Western world, who adopted the styling in the '50s, '60s and beyond. Worn in-line with their sharp, intentional aesthetic, the mods, ska and reggae scenes wore the shirt buttoned up to the top; their checks the bolder the better.
