03Interview

Name, where are you from?
My Name is Dylan Cartlidge! :) I’m originally from The Midlands but reside in a small coastal town in the North East called Redcar.

What do you do?
I’m an alternative hip-hop artist, I rap, produce and do my best impression of a bassist, keyboard player and singer.

Describe your style in three words?
Kooky black guy.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
My fiancé got me tickets to see one of my all-time favourite bands/artists, Cage The Elephant before Covid hit and hands down the best performance I’ve seen.

If you could put any three bands in history on a lineup?
If It had to be three, I’m somebody who’s obsessed with the early 2000s so I’d say The White Stripes, The Black Keys and The Strokes would be my absolute dream :D

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Anime, skateboarding, punk, hippy subcultures, memes, all these subcultures have been an internal influence on me.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
If it could be anybody it would probably be Sigmund Freud, I’m a bit of an over-thinker and really find psychology interesting, so to pick his brains about the current state of the collective human mind would be crazy.

Where is your favourite independent venue?
It has to be The Sugarmill in Stoke-On-Trent, fantastic venue, with grassroots bands at the forefront, the staff are music legends with a beautifully poised and balanced view of business and art, a rarity these days.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Kid Cudi, I feel like he saved a generation of disenfranchised, broken and emo teenagers in the 2000s.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Neighbourhood' by Space - found this CD lying on the floor when I was a kid and got obsessed.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Baby. its Fact' by HelloGoodbye - I think today I would be called, a simp!

One record you would keep forever?
'Songs In The Key Of Life' by Stevie Wonder, CLASSIC.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
Too many to name! Being a rapper, lyrics and meaning in songs has always appealed to me and I consider myself a student of the game. Earl Sweatshirt was always a lyrical animal, the lyrics on his 'EARL' mixtape were CRAZY, everything, metaphors for days.

A song you wished you had written?
'Daylight' by Matt and Kim, tune forever in my heart.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Goosebumps' by Travis Scott - absolute trap anthem.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Mess Around' by Ray Charles.

A song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Reptilia' by The Strokes.

Any new bands you’re into at the moment?
Really loving Sure Sure, IDLES and More Fatter atm.
