03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Jerome Thomas, from Hackney, London.

What do you do?
I’m a singer-songwriter/creative.

Describe your style in three words?
Nostalgic, present, future.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
D'Angelo, The Vanguard Tour. The stand out tune that night was 'Spanish Joint'.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’d say the black hippie culture has influenced me as it pertains to how freely I express my artistry and how I go about channelling my creativity.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Amy Winehouse. Aside from the fact that she's an amazing songwriter and vocalist, she was an endearing personality, and I would have loved to know more about the person behind the art.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen. The capacity is about 300/350 people, the space allowed for the perfect amount of intimacy (for me), the stage was a nice size so I had space to run around and I was still able to interact with the crowd, the lighting was also amazing.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Marvin Gaye, his influence within and throughout RnB and soul music is something that isn't given enough credit. I constantly hear his melody lines and signature riffs in today's contemporary artists, which is a testament to how timeless his music is.

Jerome Thomas recently released his EP 'That Secret Sauce'. Listen, purchase or stream it via rhythmsection.lnk.to/ThatSecretSauce.

The first track you played on repeat?

One record you would keep forever?
'Brown Sugar' by D'Angelo.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Messy mind, messy bedroom"

From 'Spotless Mind' by Jerome Thomas.

A song you wished you had written?
'I Heard Love is Blind' by Amy Winehouse.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Black' (and 'Black 2') by Buddy.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Gully Creepa' by Elephant Man.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Summer Madness' by Kool & The Gang.
