Traditionally woven with natural vegetable dyes, the vivid colours and irregular checks later appealed to the Western world, who adopted the styling in the '50s, '60s and beyond. Worn in-line with their sharp, intentional aesthetic, the mods, ska and reggae scenes wore the shirt buttoned up to the top; their checks the bolder the better.
