What do you do?
Musician
Where are you from?
Saitama, Japan.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I was stunned when I first saw a live clip of Queen which I found on a website that introduced the classic Western music, such as The Stones and The Beatles. I was still in secondary school. It might have been a music video, but anyway I had only known songs that used a lot of harmonies so they sounded totally new for me.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Fashion I guess. I was checking the street snaps where you would find Vivienne Westwood clothes and accessories and they were quite pricy for a girl in high school but I worked super hard taking a part-time job and bought a necklace actually. Burberry is pretty. I like goth-inspired things and also, Peter Mitchell’s photos are interesting. You can see some of his works on his website but one of his photo book called 'Scarecrows' made me think as if I’m having a tender nightmare.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
The best one was at Endoji temple in Nagoya. Last year, I had an opportunity to perform there for a festival related to Aichi Triennale 2019. It was fun to perform there since the stage was set up at the entrance space so wanderers and shoppers with kids stopped by to watch my performance.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
I want to rap over Bonobo’s tracks. His track in the playlist is my favourite one and I’ve been singing over it with my own lyrics in the shower. I also like Mura Masa’s sound too. His tracks sound like a huge toy jewellery box flipped around and super cool, you know.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
One hour sounds really short but maybe someone like Brian Eno, or Mura Masa would be nice too. This is going to be such a normal subject but I’d ask about the track making or favourite films and all. I think Mura Masa watches Japanese anime and I’m a fan too so we need to talk about it for sure. I probably should show some appreciation for making time of course. A gift maybe.
Your greatest unsung hero (or heroine) in music?
I think MUHLA is. There’s something fascinating about his music that takes your consciousness to a place far, far away and deep.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Strawberry Fields Forever' by The Beatles.
As I mentioned about the website but I found this song via the internet during secondary school and I remember playing this on repeat.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Xtal' by Aphex Twin.
During high school I suppose, I started listening to ambient music like this track. I keep imagining a clip of humanity flowing through a thick tube for some reason.
One record you would keep forever?
'76:14' by Global Communication.
'14:31' is my choice when I’m feeling low. It’s a fairly lengthy 14-minute and 38-second track that you would feel soothed by the end of it.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'Wings' by Little Simz.
I’m often attacked or given unwelcome advice from people who don’t love me but this track is cheering me up.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen or 'Don't Look Back in Anger' by Oasis.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Aphex Twin, Brian Eno and Bonobo. I release hip hop or tracks that involve singing but I’m into ambient when it comes to listening especially when I feel tired from hearing vocals.
New bands you are listening to now?
Little Simz and Ella Mai. I get the impression that Ella Mai has special vocal cords… as if her voice consists of multiple wave lines.
