03Interview

Name, where are you from?
My name is Eliana and I’m from London.

What do you do?
I play bass for Beabadoobee.

Describe your style in three words?
I’d describe my style in three words as “probably from eBay”.

Which music defines the teenage you?
For me, a lot of the punk and rock music scene defines my teenage years. For example, 'Rock The Casbah' by The Clash was definitely an early love of mine.

A British icon or band who inspire your sound?
That would have to be Led Zeppelin, in particular 'The Lemon Song', which was one of the first songs I (attempted!) to learn on guitar. I was brought up on a lot of Zeppelin and I feel like you never really forget what/who first inspired you to create.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
My all-time favourite gig was probably seeing Slowdive at a festival in Paris with my mate a few years ago. Them playing 'Crazy For You' was particularly memorable.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
'Down In The Tube Station At Midnight' by The Jam. My dad was a huge influence in my music upbringing and he pretty much swears by anything Weller does.

A song from your favourite album?
'Connected' by Stereo MC’s - it’s one of those albums where there’s not a single skippable song.

A song you wish you’d written?
'Waterloo Sunset' by The Kinks. Having lived in various parts of London my whole life, the lyrics feel so nostalgic and the melody sounds just as beautiful as the first time I heard it.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
The last piece of music I bought is a tough one…everything is available online nowadays so there’s less hype around buying physical copies of things. I guess technically it would be the entrance fee to Ronnie Scott’s jazz club the other week where we heard renditions of Charlie Parker's 'Bird With Strings', so I’ll go with 'April In Paris' by Charlie Parker.

A song that brings people together?
'Mr. Blue Sky' by Electric Light Orchestra. It’s just such a happy summer song which is exactly what everyone needs right now I think…!

Best love song of all time?
'Here You Come Again' by Dolly Parton, not for any particular reason other than the lyrics feel super relatable to a lot of people and it’s just a really well-written song.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
'7 Things' by Miley Cyrus…it’s the most teenage girl angst song ever and feels like a total glimpse into the 00s, and for that, I love it, haha.

What new music/bands are you listening to?
New music I’m listening to at the moment consists of a lot of jazz and funk, especially if it has a great bass line for me to learn. 'Street Pharmacy' by Butcher Brown is a pretty good example I think.
