03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Ruby Horton, London.

What do you do?
Venue Manager at the 100 Club.

Describe your style in three words?
Not too bad.

Which music defines the teenage you?
Amy Winehouse. I was obsessed with Amy Winehouse as a teenager, I thought she was one of the coolest people I’d seen. I watched every live performance, interview, anything she did. Somewhere in the venue we still have the AAA pass from the night she played. Gutted to have missed it.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
The Chemical Brothers. Not sure if festivals count, but both times they were great.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
'Hurry Up Harry' by Sham 69. I think it must be the song I asked to be played the most when I was growing up, it was always on in the house. That or something by Fatboy Slim. Whenever I was slow-walking back from school, my dad would run ahead and start singing it to get me moving.

A song from your favourite album?
'Plants and Rags' by PJ Harvey. I don’t really know what makes a favourite album, but this is the one I always come back to and never seem get sick of. Everything she’s put out is brilliant, it was hard to choose.

A song you wish you’d written?
'Forever' by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Siouxsie was also a big teenage obsession, and I think this song is beautiful. There’s a great photo of Siouxsie Sioux with Chrissie Hynde, Deborah Harry, Viv Albertine, Poly Styrene and Pauline Black, all sat together, and when I first saw it, I went through quite literally everything they all had ever made.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
'Pish' by Brian Jonestown Massacre. A track I break out when I don’t know what else to play.

Best song to bring people together?
'Uptown Top Ranking' by Althea and Donna. I think everyone was born knowing this tune.

Best love song of all time?
'Baby I Need Your Loving' by The Four Tops. Never fails to get people moving, my mum included. A regular track at the Northern Soul all-nighters.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
'Frozen' by Madonna. Regularly on repeat to be honest.

What new music/bands are you listening to?
'Fever' by Lime Garden.
'7ft Tall Post-Suicidal Feel Good Blues' by Nancy.
'Send Me' by Tirzah.
'Coltan Candy' by moa moa.
'Guided by Angels' by Amyl and The Sniffers.
