Coasts, are four lads from Bristol who make alt indie-pop with tropical guitar riffs and big choruses. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Peace and Foals, Coasts have been working hard to keep up with the demand for their new releases and live performances, putting out the 'Paradise EP' in April earlier year, along an extensive Autumn UK tour.

Read below for an exclusive interview from Coasts.

The ‘Stay’ & remixes EP is out now, available here on Tidal Recordings.

INTERVIEW

How did you all meet and decide to make music together?

We all met at university in Bath before moving to Bristol and deciding to start a band. We all liked pretty similar things and thought it’d be fun to start a band together.

How did you decide on the name Coasts?

A few different names were banded around and we even played a gig as ‘Bordeaux’ before we found out another band already had that name. It took us quite a while to get to Coasts, but we wanted something simple that summed up the sort of music we wanted to be making and we think it works.

How would you describe your sound?

We’re a pop band at heart but we bring elements of dancehall and tropical rhythms to that and try to create something that makes people want to dance.

Who did you grow up listening to?

We all grew up listening to a range of different things, my dad brought me up on the music of his generation so it was stuff like Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles and then I discovered stuff like The Cure and Joy Division as I got slightly older. I listen to most things nowadays though, as long as it’s a good song.

What influences you, other than music?

Everything really; the summer, love, parties, heartbreak. All of the usual things.

What new music are you listening to at the moment?

We’re on tour at the moment so it can be tough to keep up with new music. We played with a band called MOATS the other day though and they were pretty ace.

What's been the best show you've played recently and why?

We played at Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg a few weeks ago and that was really good. It was at the St Pauli FC Clubhouse and it sold out with loads more people trying to get in on the door. It was really something to have that many people wanting to see you in another country.

Who are your biggest style Icons?

We like classic looks really, stuff like black jeans, plain tees and denim jackets. We just wanna look like James Dean.

If you could have any artist, dead of alive, cover you, who would it be?

That’s a tough question, I think it’d be awesome for someone really different to cover one of our songs who’d bring a completely different angle to it. Maybe someone like Nina Simone or Amy Winehouse.
