“In 1993 Primal Scream went to Memphis to make an album with Tom Dowd and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, that album never saw the light of day, until now.” - Bobby Gillespie 2018

In 1991 Primal Scream released 'Screamadelica', regarded ever since as an era-defining record that helped mark a turning point in the direction of UK music for years to follow. With the success under their belt, Primal Scream were afforded a degree of freedom when it came to the follow-up.

Primal Scream took the decision to travel all the way to Memphis to record the album at Ardent Studios with producer and multi-track recording pioneer Tom Dowd, whose credits included Aretha Franklin, Cream, Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Otis Redding and Dusty Springfield to name but a few. Coupled with the input of famed American studio band the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, the combination sounded like a dream come true for the recording of Creation's big Primal Scream follow-up.

Nine songs were recorded in total, drawing out the gospel rock 'n' roll elements in Primal Scream that had already given rise to songs such as 'Movin On Up'. The songs included 'Jailbird', 'Rocks' and 'Cry Myself Blind' and six others that went on to become the now familiar 1994 album 'Give Out But Don’t Give Up'.

It seems both the band and Alan McGee were disappointed with the songs' execution when they sat down to listen to the tapes, and the tracks were eventually reworked into 'Give Out But Don’t Give Up', with producer George Drakoulias of Rick Rubin's American Recordings.

The Ardent tapes never saw the light of day again until Andrew Innes recently found them again in a box in his cellar like a perfectly preserved time capsule.

“There’s definitely a lesson to be learned about how creativity can go down the wrong track. We’re a band that constantly keeps moving and doesn’t look back, but, for years, I felt bad about us going to Memphis and not doing what we set out to do. Hearing these songs after all this time has made everything all right again. I feel redeemed.” Bobby Gillespie

The Tom Down Album Mix will now become the basis of ‘Give Out But Don’t Give Up: The Original Memphis Recordings', to be released on 12th October (2018), with the CD and digital formats also including another 15 tracks from the Memphis sessions.
