On first listen to The Fanclub one would be hard pushed not to draw a comparison between vocalist Josh Todd and Steven Morissey. Whether this is practice or coincidence one of the two singles ‘A Real Horror (Part II)’ released in anticipation for a forthcoming debut album holds the answer to such a notion, the band themselves declaring it as a ‘thank you note to The Smiths.’
Todd’s vocal line acting as an ultimate dopplegänger of Morissey, with the backing to match makes ‘A Real Horror (Part II)’ distinctly radio friendly material which comes as no surprise from a band with previous airplay on Radio 2.
The other single ‘Let’s Measure Next Year Better,’ available for free download takes a different, more somber edge than the former swelling to a dramatic finale, displaying another aspect of The Fanclub’s material. It pushes them away from a Smiths-esque pigeonhole, with production from Greg Haver of Super Furry Animals and Manic Street Preachers fame shining through.
The double-sided single will be released August 8th on Underdogs Music.
