03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Crystal Murray, I live in Paris.

Describe your style in three words?
Punk-ish 'Marie Antoinette' cowboy.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
A Macy Gray show at the Blue Note in Japan. She sang that song called 'Relating To A Psychopath' and literally went into a trance while singing and one of her earrings fell out and I caught it and she gave it to me - a very iconic moment.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Probably serpentwithfeet, new gospel type. Maybe he could do the opening with his song 'Whisper'. Tyler, The Creator is one of my biggest inspirations. His evolution makes so much sense and from the first album to the last, I discovered so many different pieces of him - he will continue the show with 'ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?' Even if it’s one sentence we will just listen to him repeat the same sentence. Prince is also a very big performance inspiration to me. His whole energy and sexiness makes me want to scream on stage (as he has passed, this would be in an ideal world) He would start with 'Darling Nikki' and finish with 'Kiss' because it’s my dream to see that performance.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I think maybe the punk movement started influencing me not long ago - because of the energy they put on stage and in their music. I don’t especially listen to punk music but I’m very interested in the way of thinking, moving, the fashion...

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
I haven’t played in too many venues just yet but the best and most fun are always unexpected - like galleries and houses.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Betty Davis. Santigold.
