03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Soul Train Punk

The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?

The Prodigy - Breathe

In my brother’s bedroom when I was 8 on his cassette player.

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

Prince - If I Was Your Girlfriend

For me, this is the most poignant song on the album. Such emotion and almost desperation in his voice. Don’t think I’ll ever listen to it and not well up.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Spiritualized - Cop Shoot Cop...

It was at Hackney Empire. The gig was completely seated, which was perfect for Spiritualized. The sound was so big and beautiful and there were 4 lightbulbs on the corners of each of the stage; lighting up in sequence to create huge moving shadows of the band.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

Adonis - No Way Back

Pure genius. So simple and so catchy. My favourite Chicago House track.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

Shit And Shine - Mingler

Shit & Shine have such a fresh sound. Absolutely love how textured this track is. The sample of that classic James Brown interview is perfect.

Best song to turn up loud? And why?

The Stooges - No Fun

Literally anywhere I can. Rock & roll heartbreak.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Clan Aint Nuthing ta F' Wit

Hanging out at the basketball court at about 13, with a terribly plastic and tinny boom box.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

Pigbag - Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag - 12" Verison

Such a huge and recognisable melody with amazing percussion and rhythm. It’s one of those songs that everyone knows but (it seems) few know who it’s by.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Suede - Animal Nitrate

It’s one of those songs that you don’t want to hear at silly o’ clock the next day - it’s a good way to get people out of your place.
